U.S. Trade and Development Agency
Pakistan: Bagasse-Based Cogeneration Development Orientation Visit
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is sponsoring a “Pakistan: Bagasse-based Cogeneration Development Orientation Visit (OV)” to the United States in May 2010. A delegation of 15 Pakistani senior level government officials and executives from the sugar industry will travel for a 10 business-day tour of the U.S. to meet with federal, state and local government officials and business representatives. The delegation will comprise representatives from the following:
- Pakistani sugar mills with planned investments in bagasse cogeneration
- Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB)
- National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA)
- U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service (U.S. Department of Commerce)
The visit will provide various opportunities for the Pakistani delegates to learn about policy and regulatory strategies and programs applied in the U.S. to encourage renewable energy resource utilization and cogeneration development, as well as about appropriate U.S. technologies and systems that may be used in the sugar mill industry in Pakistan to efficiently generate both thermal and electrical power (i.e., cogeneration).
The delegation will tour several bagasse-based cogeneration projects in Louisiana and Florida; and participate in roundtable discussions in Washington, DC with technology manufacturers/ providers and service vendors; industry associations; and financing institutions. In New Orleans, LA, the delegation members will present sector background information and descriptions of sugar mill cogeneration projects in the pipeline, including procurement needs, financing and investment opportunities, energy sales prospects, and implementation schedules for these projects, at a Business Briefing scheduled for Friday, May 14, 2010. At this event, U.S. business representatives will have an opportunity to schedule one-on-one meetings with individual delegates in the afternoon to promote their company’s products and services.
The Business Briefing and overall trade mission is designed to promote modern U.S. bagasse-based cogeneration technologies, systems and services relevant to Pakistan’s bagasse-based cogeneration project needs, as well as other biomass energy-based technologies (e.g., cellulosic, digestion, etc.). Key points of focus include:
- Increasing power generating capacity in Pakistan through cogeneration and efficient utilization of sugar cane bagasse, applicable to identified projects under development in Pakistan.
- Introducing the delegates to appropriate pricing and policy approaches for biomass energy cogeneration that may serve to increase power supply with energy-efficient generating technologies using indigenous fuels in Pakistan.
- Promoting U.S. industry interests in Pakistan’s renewable energy and biomass energy cogeneration sub-sectors, which have tremendous growth potential.
- Ensuring that Pakistan’s energy policy decisions consider international best practices for energy efficiency and power regulation relevant to incremental biomass-based cogeneration capacity, and to promote the expansion, increased productivity and competitiveness of Pakistan’s sugar industry-based energy options.
